Natural State Wood

Holm Oak (Holly Oak)/Ash base by Randal Leek

#M40
29 x 9 x 4 in.
Holm Oak (Holly Oak)/Ash base.

This piece of wood was split off of a fairly large oak tree in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, where most of the firewood in Kabul is brought in from. Firewood comes from pieces of the tree that are unusable for lumber, in this case, the grains are very twisted making it perfect for sculpting into unusual, natural looking art forms. This holm oak material is very dense, tight grained and takes on an almost glass-like polish.

Holm Oak (Holly Oak)/Zebra Wood base by Randal Leek.

#L33
24 x 6 x 4 in.
Holm Oak (Holly Oak)/Zebra Wood base.

This piece highlights the darkened, cracked, highly dense wood from Afghanistan. It is shaped by the artist to capture the natural beauty that comes from weathering at high altitudes in the dry desert air typical of Central Asia, with extreme heat of summers and colds of winters.

17 x 7 x 4 in. Holm Oak (Holly Oak) by Randal Leek

#H23
17 x 7 x 4 in.
Holm Oak (Holly Oak).

This piece captures the natural beauty that the combined elements of a harsh arid environment give to wood.  Contrasting the ancient exposed exterior with the polished interior grain, the twisted, natural curves of this piece reminds one of a solitary dance caught in natural form.

Rosewood/Alder base, Beautiful Daughter by Randal Leek

#B1
29 x 6 ½ x 6 in.
Rosewood/Alder base.

“Beautiful Daughter”
Rosewood is rare, especially pieces that have been naturally dried and weathered in the arid harsh climate of eastern Afghanistan. The color and texture of Rosewood gives this piece such beauty. Its density allows it to be sculpted to hard but delicate edges. It is a pleasure to work with in all respects.
