While attending the Institute of Allende in San Miguel, MEXICO I studied native clays and table ware, as well as silver smithing and looms.  There I learned to appreciate the native earthenware ceramic forms and traditions.

  

I find the direct approach to making utilitarian ware practiced by native Mexican potters refreshing in contrast to formulated clays, glazes and kilns.  Although native earthenware pottery is not compatible with dishwashers and microwave ovens, the traditional Olla forms are still relevant.  Fired at Terra Cotta temperatures and with their wide range of forms, clay slip decoration, burnished and smoke blackened surfaces  they are challenging to build and inspiring
